PC Software for the Elecraft K3

K3 Filter Tools (Version 1.0.4) Updated 01/14/2014:

K3 Filter Tools was developed to allow K3 owners to characterize the crystal roofing filters installed in their radios, as well as the adjustable DSP filters. All that is needed is a clean, stable signal source that can be injected into the K3's antenna port. The data generated by the program for each crystal filter, or DSP filter configuration, can be saved, and the program can generate a simple plot of the data which can also be saved.

With K3 Filter Tools the user can measure the -3dB, -6dB, and -60dB bandwidths of each filter and calculate the filter shape factor, and then compare the results to Elecraft's published specifications. You can also engage DSP filtering at selected bandwidths to see how the combination of crystal and DSP filtering affects the passband and shape of the filter skirts. You can also look at just the nose of the filter and see how flat the passband is and the extent of bandpass tilt. Experienced users will certainly find other uses for the program.

Version 1.0.3 incorporates these revisions and bug fixes:

Version 1.0.4 incorporates these revisions and bug fixes:

We ran a number of tests using K3 Filter tools to determine how the filter response is affected by the Pitch setting of the K3 when running filter sweeps in CW mode. The results clearly show that Pitch is a significant factor that needs to be considered when running filter sweeps. In brief, set your Pitch to 800 Hz for best results.

Effect of Pitch on Filter Response

We also ran tests to determine whether better results can be obtained by using an operating mode other than CW because of the obvious limitations on low frequency response in CW mode. The results show that using Data A mode produces better low frequency response on the filter skirts than using CW mode. In short, we recommend tests of your CW filters be run in Data A mode.

Mac OS X Applications for the Elecraft K3 and KX3

K3NetServer for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Version 1.1 Released 11/19/2011

K3NetServer is a server application for the Mac that provides two-way communication between an iPhone via WiFi and an Elecraft K3 or KX3 radio attached to the Mac via a serial cable.

If you wish to use K3iNetwork or K3iDitDah with a Mac computer attached to your K3/KX3 via a serial port, you need to download and install one of the following available servers:

K3NetServer and SServer communicate with the K3/KX3 via a RS232 serial cable connected between the Mac and the K3/P3 or KX3. K3iNetwork or K3iDitDah communicate with K3NetServer or SServer over WiFi and commands are passed through K3NetServer or SServer to the K3/KX3. K3/KX3 responses are returned to K3iNetwork (iPhone) via K3NetServer or SServer and the WiFi connection.

K3NetServer Instructions:

  1. Get K3NetServer from one of the links below. Install K3NetServer on your Mac. Connect your K3/P3 or KX3 to the serial cable from your Mac and turn the K3/P3 or KX3 on. Make sure the K3/KX3 is operating at 38400 Baud.
  2. Start K3NetServer and select the Serial Port Setup tab. Select your serial port from the list. Leave the other settings at the defaults. Click on Open Port. Then click on Test Comm. You should see a response from the K3/KX3.
  3. Select the Server Startup tab and click on Start Server. It will indicate "K3NetServer started on host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx." The "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" represents the IP Address of the Mac that K3NetServer is installed on. It will also indicate "K3NetServer started on port xxxxx." The "xxxxx" represents the port number selected for use by the server. Take note of the IP Address and Port as you will need them to set up K3iNetwork or K3iDitDah. (Note: You can optionally enter a port number before you start the server if you want it to operate on a specific port of your choice.)
  4. Select the Command Tester tab if you wish to test various K3 or KX3 commands. See the Elecraft K3/KX3 Programmer's Reference for a complete reference of available commands.
  5. Select the Monitor tab if you wish to monitor communications between K3iNetwork or K3iDitDah and the K3/KX3. You can also enter K3/KX3 commands in the To K3 box to test communication between K3NetServer and the K3/KX3.

K3iNetwork:

iPhone Version 2.1 Released February 17, 2018 | Not currently available for Android phones

K3iNetwork provides remote control of the Elecraft K3 or KX3 via a WiFi network and PC/Mac server program. The user can control many functions of the K3/KX3 radio using their iPhone. CW, RTTY and PSK31 QSOs are possible. The user can watch text from the K3/KX3 VFO B window stream to their iPhone in the Terminal tab window, and send CW, RTTY, or PSK, as appropriate, in response.

K3iNetwork has windows patterned after the Command Tester and Terminal windows of the Elecraft K3 Utility program. It provides similar functionality, and it can all be accomplished remotely using the iPhone. Once the user establishes communication with the K3/KX3 via a WiFi network the iPhone is used to control the K3 or KX3.

As with the K3 Utility program the Commands tab allows the user to send commands to the K3 and read the response in a text window. Users who are familiar with the K3/KX3 command set can control many aspects of K3 or KX3 operation with the Commands window. In addition, users can test and save macros for later use to quickly set multiple K3/KX3 operating parameters with one tap of a button.

The Terminal tab functions in a manner similar to the K3 Utility Terminal tab. The user can send text to the K3 or KX3 to be transmitted in CW, RTTY, or PSK modes. Further, the text displayed on the K3/KX3 VFO B window is shown in a text window on the iPhone. Thus it is possible to carry on CW or some data mode QSOs using your iPhone.

The Controls tab provides a number of K3/KX3 front panel controls. There are several buttons available to the user on the iPhone interface that allow direct control of K3/KX3 functions. For example, the user can turn the K3 preamp or attenuator on or off by tapping the corresponding buttons on their iPhone. The More... button opens a form with additional K3 and KX3 controls. However, there are several K3 front panel controls that have no equivalent on the KX3. In those cases the K3 control is replaced with one available on the KX3 as follows:

The K3iNetwork application is designed to work with the user's home WiFi network. To use it with a WiFi network the user will install K3NetServer or SServer on their PC or Mac. K3NetServer and SServer communicate with the K3 or KX3 via a RS232 serial cable connected between the PC/Mac and the K3/P3 or KX3. K3iNetwork communicates with K3NetServer or SServer over WiFi and commands are passed through K3NetServer or SServer to the K3/KX3. K3/KX3 responses are returned to K3iNetwork (iPhone) via K3NetServer or SServer and the Wifi connection.

Note: For best results for Mac users install K3NetServer Version 1.1 to use K3iNetwork Version 1.4.2. Or use SServer for Mac OS X. See below for links to this software.

K3iDitDah:

iPhone Version 1.2.2 Released February 4, 2014 | Not currently available for Android phones

K3iDitDah provides remote control of the Elecraft K3 or KX3 via a WiFi network and PC/Mac server program. This app is very similar to K3iNetwork except that instead of using the iPhone's virtual keyboard to send text to be transmitted, the user taps out morse code using Dit and Dah buttons.

K3iDitDah has windows patterned after the Command Tester and Terminal windows of the Elecraft K3 Utility program. It provides similar functionality, and it can all be accomplished remotely using the iPhone. Once the user establishes communication with the K3/KX3 via a WiFi network the iPhone is used to control the K3 or KX3.
